Val di Sole

The ​​Val di Sole Focus Area is enclosed between the Brenta Dolomites, the Adamello group to the south, the Maddalene chain, and the Ortles-Cevedale group to the north. The valley has an extension of 40 kilometers and is crossed by the river Noce and the Vermigliana torrent. The valley floor’s elevation ranges between 680 and 1800 meters above sea level, with peaks that exceed 3500 m.a.s.l..

It consists of 13 municipalities (Caldes, Cavizzana, Commezzadura, Croviana, Dimaro Folgarida, Malè, Mezzana, Ossana, Peio, Pellizzano, Rabbi, Terzolas e Vermiglio) and numerous small hamlets for a total of 611.54 sq km, it is populated by 15,601 inhabitants (2019) with a density of 25.51 inhabitants / sq. Km. A great part of the Val di Sole's surface is covered by protected areas, such as the Adamello Brenta Natural Park in the south and the Stelvio National Park in the north, which are important nature reserves for the fauna and flora of the Alps.

Since 2010 it has been recognised as a Valley Community from the Autonomous Province of Trento (L.p.n.3 of 16/06/2006) and in 2016 it was acknowledged as the second pilot area of the Trentino region in the National Strategy for Internal Areas (SNAI).

The etymology of Val di Sole dates back to the Celtic divinity of the waters Sulis, considered the Great Mother source of life, which the Romans identified with Minerva. Indeed, the element that characterizes the Val di Sole is water and its link with the territory emerge through multiple forms and activities: streams, rivers, waterfalls, snow and glaciers; sawmills, mills, renewable energies, winter sports, river sports, thermal springs.
